Meet the Simbaz

Behind every kilometre
is a person, an ambition
and an opportunity.

Safari Simbaz is built on a simple belief: that ambitious young people should be given the opportunity, encouragement and practical skills to shape their own future.

Mentors support, guide and open doors, but the journey belongs to the individual. The aim is not to create a future for someone else, but to help people build the confidence, skills and experience to create their own.

That principle sits at the heart of this project.

David Kinjah

"We are not waiting for someone to come and teach us. We are becoming the teachers."

Founder of Safari Simbaz. Growing up riding old BMX bikes and fixing whatever he could get his hands on, Kinjah started riding seriously in 1994 and was racing internationally within a year. He went on to race for Kenya at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and All-Africa Games, and compete in major events including the Cape Epic and Crocodile Trophy.

Kinjah started the Safari Simbaz project in 1998, building two camps where kids learn to ride, fix bikes and pick up skills for life. He brought Chris Froome into the Simbaz at twelve, and their training years shaped Froome's early career — they still stay in touch, and Froome became an ambassador for Safari Simbaz in 2023. Kinjah's work has helped hundreds of young people find their path on and off the bike. Today, based near Mount Kenya, he continues to run camps, train riders and grow the Safari Simbaz vision.

Samuel

"I want to become a qualified mechanic — and then teach others to do the same."

A junior mechanic who grew up around Safari Simbaz, Samuel learned to strip and rebuild a bike before he could drive. He now helps run weekend workshops for younger riders.

Samuel first came to Safari Simbaz at fourteen, borrowing a bike to ride to school. Eight years on, he's the one teaching others to fix their own. He wants to turn that hands-on knowledge into a recognised qualification — and eventually run his own workshop.

What Samuel wants to do next

To open a community workshop that trains the next generation of mechanics.

Amina

"If someone falls, I want to be the person who knows exactly what to do."

A rider and aspiring first responder, Amina joined Safari Simbaz through a school cycling programme. She's now part of the first-aid training cohort.

Amina saw a teammate fall on a training ride and realised no one around knew what to do. She decided that had to change. She's working toward a recognised first-aid qualification she can use both on the road and in her community.

What Amina wants to do next

To bring first-aid training to women's cycling groups across the county.

Brian

"I used to follow the group. Now I lead it. One day I'll teach others to lead too."

A mechanic and ride leader, Brian splits his time between the workshop and leading group rides for new riders. He's part of the train-the-trainer cohort.

Brian started as a quiet teenager who barely spoke on rides. Today he leads them. He's working toward becoming a qualified instructor so he can standardise the training Safari Simbaz delivers — and pass it on to others.

What Brian wants to do next

To run a structured training programme that any Simba could one day teach.
